Taiwan’s ‘Zero Day’ Series Debuts, Offering a Stark Portrayal of a Hypothetical Chinese Invasion

On June 4, 2025, Taiwan launched the much-anticipated television series Zero Day, a ten-episode anthology that delves into the multifaceted consequences of a hypothetical Chinese military invasion. Each episode, directed by a different filmmaker, presents a unique narrative exploring themes of cyber warfare, psychological operations, and societal resilience.

The series premiered at the 2025 Copenhagen Democracy Summit on May 13, accompanied by a panel discussion featuring host Janet Hsieh and screenwriter Hsin-Mei Cheng. Critics have lauded Zero Day for its realistic depiction of hybrid warfare and its impact on civilian life. The Small Wars Journal described it as “perfectly illustrating the multifaceted nature of modern hybrid warfare,” blending conventional military tactics with cyber operations and psychological manipulation. Walter Russell Mead of The Wall Street Journal noted that the series offers “an invaluable introduction to a looming great power conflict that could upend all our lives.”

The release of Zero Day comes amid escalating tensions across the Taiwan Strait, with increased military activities and diplomatic friction between Taiwan and China. By dramatizing potential scenarios, the series aims to raise public awareness and foster dialogue about national security and preparedness.

Zero Day is now available for streaming on major platforms in Taiwan and select international markets.
